A big Granny Square...

My fiancee who is very much interested in all my activities , went on a yarn hunt last month and brought me a bag full of colorful yarns and threads.Lucky ME!!! He is such a source of inspiration and motivation.Since i haven't worked with threads earlier, i started working with threads. A stole and a cell phone pouch is in the process of making.

To give a break, I peeped into my  stash and found the sublime aqua and pista shades of yarn.Immediately my hands twitched and started crocheting a granny square. A big granny!
Planning to do a granny bag ! Lets see.... I got the edges neat this time. Happy crocheting!

Happy weekend :)

The weekend that just passed by was great for me. It revived me after a bout of ill health. The weekend started with a fantastic movie. My fiancee took me to "LIFE OF PI" movie.
Even before the release of the movie, I was so excited to see it. The novel is my all time favorite. Its a masterpiece work of fantasy, adventure and spirituality mixed in right proportions.

I had a wonderful experience reading the book, hence had a huge expectation on the movie. Coming  to the movie, it is definitely a visual treat. The 3D works are amazing and the Bengal tiger -Richard Parker is an animation! One can't believe that the tiger is an animation. In one particular shot were they show the close up of the Parker's eyes with all fear of drowning and its plea to PI to save it -WOW !

The carnivorous forest is another treat. Visuals are breath taking.I felt a pang of disappointment with the content of the movie. From my view point, the very spirituality of the story is lost in the making of the movie. Somehow, I couldn't connect to the movie. The struggle for existence and the philosophy of religion are better brought out in text than in visuals.Definitely the movie can be watched for the 3D experience.

The other movie that i enjoyed was "Neer paravai". I haven't seen the director's first movie "Thenmerku paruvakatru "- a critically acclaimed and national award winning movie. Watching this movie was like reading a novel for me. It kindled my spirits to read all my fav novels like "Chemmen" & "Kadalpurathil"

Sensational story, clear & crisp screenplay, subtle yet powerful dialouges and pakka casting= Neerparavai. The background score and songs could have been better. The never ending threat faced by Rameshwaram fishermen in the sea border is dealt with  emotions in the movie. The Neithal (sea and its shore)land has been well captured. My favourite actress,Nandita das has donned the lead role. This is a must watch.

The week ended with a calm lunch at a thai resturant called"CHAO". The ambience was good with images and statues of Buddha all around. It gave a sense a serenity. After a chaotic week, the ambience itself was relaxing. Food was good and service decent (Though they gave me sambal fried rice instead of basil that i ordered- again it was due to some confusion that we created).

Altogether it was a wonderful weekend with good food , movies and rest!

Cell Phone Cozy!

Few works in my crochet desk are still in progress.Meanwhile i wanted to do something simple and useful. Also that it is not time consuming!
Searched the net and found the pattern for a cell phone cozy. I liked the texture of the pattern and decided to give it a try. Till then i knew only few basic stitches like single, half double, double and treble crochet.Used shell stitch in one of my WIP but not satisfied with the outcome.

On seeing this pattern initially I was scared."How am I going to do such a complicated stitch? " was my first thought.
With some guts,I went through the pattern and found that it is easy.
Started working ,went wrong all the way, ripped it off and started again!

This time it is near perfect!
Wanted to give it a red/maroon colour button , but i had only yellow. So settled with yellow.

New to this world.....

A jack of all trades and master of none. That is me! Since childhood i've fiddled with many hobbies like gardnening,painting,crafts,numismatics....... but pursued none seriously. My perennial hobbies are reading books and chatting.Few months back, I had a strong urge to start a new hobby and started searching in net for the list of hobbies.Somehow i was attracted towards crochet. Then what? Started googling and saw videos in Youtube about crochet . After enough research in net,I wanted to try my hands on crochet. My fiancee presented me with a supereb set of crochet hooks and a book about crochet. My hunt for yarns started  and i could get hold of only low quality acrylic yarns in Chennai market. With the help of Youtube video tutorials ,I started crochetting. The poor quality yarn made it difficult for me to crochet and often I ended up messing with the yarn.
But like Vikramaditya, I tried and tried and now have good hold of the stitches.
I did few granny squares to practise the stitches, crochetted a flower and a bookmark (Courtesy:Youtube)
I'm just hooked to crochet now.Hope i'll pursue this hobby ............
